Origin: Eastern Serengeti National Park, Tanzania
The Saba Bora are a coalition of young male lions in the eastern Serengeti, Tanzania, whose name in Swahili means “the best seven”, or “the magnificent seven”. They came to the world’s attention in March 2023, when they swept onto the Namiri Plains and ended the seven-year rule of the famous brothers Bob Junior (Snyggve) and Marley (Tryggve). On the morning of 11 March 2023 three of them attacked and killed Bob Junior, who was by then thin and ageing; Marley was killed in a separate attack around the same time. A Serengeti conservation officer told the BBC the killings appeared planned.
Most of the coalition were then around two to three years old. Tariq Said Sarico, the guide who had followed Bob Junior for years, began following and naming the new males. The biggest and most dominant, first nicknamed BK, for “Bob Junior Killer”, was renamed Scarnose or Chongo, “the one-eyed” in Swahili, after fans objected; a buffalo had later cost him the sight of one eye. His closest companion, Kiduku, is named for his mohawk-like crest of mane and was one of the three who killed Bob Junior. Ulimi Mbili, “two tongues”, has a forked tongue and keeps apart from his brothers.
The seven took over the Semetu Pride, Bob Junior’s own pride, whose lionesses include his daughters, and by early 2024 had also taken the Punda Kopjes pride. Two younger brothers joined them in 2024, briefly making nine, though one was badly hurt by the others. Later in 2024 three of the brothers split away as the Wasafi Boys and took the Maasai Kopjes and Boma Kopjes area. By 2025 five males of the Saba Bora were reported as the dominant males of the Semetu Pride.
Swahili for “the best seven” or “the magnificent seven”, after the number of brothers. Like Tano Bora, the famous five Mara cheetahs.
Swahili for one who sees with only one eye. Also called Scarnose; first nicknamed BK, “Bob Junior Killer”, a name dropped out of respect for Bob Junior.
A Swahili name for a haircut shaved at the sides with a strip left in the middle, like his crest of mane.
Swahili for “two tongues”, for his forked tongue.
The name given to the three brothers who split from the coalition in late 2024.
Born, most likely in the eastern Serengeti. Their birth pride has not been published.
Arrived on the Namiri Plains as young nomads, challenging Bob Junior and Marley.
Three of the brothers, Kiduku among them, attacked and killed Bob Junior near Namiri Plains. Marley was killed in a separate attack around the same time. Some reports date the fight to 10 March.
Took over the Semetu Pride, whose lionesses include Bob Junior’s daughters; the pride took months to accept them.
Guide Tariq Said Sarico began naming the brothers; the dominant male’s first nickname, BK, was replaced by Scarnose or Chongo.
Expanded their territory, taking the Punda Kopjes pride and driving out its two males, one of them badly injured.
The dominant male lost the sight of one eye after being cornered by buffalo.
One brother was injured in the back, probably by a buffalo, and slowly recovered. Two younger brothers joined the coalition, making nine, though the seven badly mauled one of them.
Three brothers split away as the Wasafi Boys and took over the Maasai Kopjes and Boma Kopjes area.
Five Saba Bora males were reported as the dominant males of the Semetu Pride.
Officials told the BBC he did not put up a fight. Photographers who saw him in his last months described him as very thin, ageing and leaning on his brother. Against seven young males in their prime, a two-male coalition past its peak had little chance.
Early reports suggested some of his killers might be related to him. There is no published evidence for this. Some of Bob Junior’s own sons are separate males, roaming nearby as nomads.
The dominant male was first called BK, for Bob Junior Killer. Fans asked for a kinder name, and the guide who follows the coalition renamed him Scarnose or Chongo.
The Saba Bora are young and still ruling, so this record will change. Much of what is known comes from local guides and fan forums; details are marked with care.
