Also known as The Giant of the Notch Boys · The Biggest Notch Son
c. 2005 – August 2017
Born in Musiara Marsh area, Masai Mara, Kenya
Caesar was a male lion of Kenya’s Masai Mara and one of the five sons of the legendary Notch. He was born into the Marsh Pride, the pride made famous by the BBC’s Big Cat Diary, while his father was its king, and he grew up to be one of the six males of the Notch Coalition, the rare father-and-sons alliance that dominated much of the Mara for about a decade. Lion followers remember him as the biggest and most handsome of the brothers, and some claim he was the largest lion the Mara has ever seen, though no measurement has been published.
When Notch was driven out of the Marsh Pride around 2007, Caesar and his brothers, Notch II, Mighty Long, Ron and Grimace, were only about two and a half years old. They left with their father and, as they grew, took over pride after pride, including Fang’s River Pride at Rekero, the story told in Disneynature’s African Cats. Caesar is often described as Ron’s closest brother. After Notch died and Grimace vanished in 2013, Caesar, Ron and Notch II moved south towards Lookout Hill and the Sand River, where Caesar held the Lookout prides.
After Ron was lost in 2016, Caesar and Notch II were the last two sons of Notch. In June 2017 Caesar was found limping badly near Lookout Hill, and a vet from the Mara Mobile Veterinary Unit treated an abscess in his right hind leg while Notch II stood guard so fiercely that two vehicles were needed to keep him away. In early August he was reported limping again with fresh wounds, thought to come from fights with rival males. He was last seen on the evening of 8 August 2017; a week-long search found nothing, and he is presumed dead.
The title of the Roman emperors, after Julius Caesar. Who first gave him the name, and why, has not been documented.
The same name spelled differently by guides, photographers and lion followers online.
Used by lion followers for his size; he is widely described as the biggest of Notch’s sons.
Born in the Marsh Pride, one of five sons of Notch, the pride’s king.
Romeo and Clawed drove Notch from the Marsh Pride. Caesar, about two and a half years old, left with his father and brothers.
Seen with his father and brothers in the BBC’s Big Cat Live.
The coalition took the River Pride at Rekero from Fang, the story told in African Cats. His brother Mighty Long disappeared.
The Notch males were reported to control five prides in the eastern Mara.
His father Notch died, and his brother Grimace vanished a few months later. Caesar, Ron and Notch II carried on as a trio and moved south towards Lookout Hill.
Filmed in the Masai Mara, still one of the dominant Notch males.
His brother Ron went missing, reportedly killed by the Sand River males, leaving Caesar and Notch II.
Filmed with the lionesses of the East Lookout pride near Lookout Hill.
Found limping badly near Lookout Hill by Matira camp guides. The Mara Mobile Veterinary Unit darted him and drained an abscess in his right hind leg while Notch II was kept away by two vehicles.
Reported limping again with fresh hind-leg wounds, thought to come from territorial fights. Notch II was also injured.
Last seen in the evening. A search over the following week found nothing; he is presumed dead, leaving Notch II as the last of the original coalition.
Caesar is often called the largest lion the Masai Mara has ever had. He was clearly a huge male and is widely described as the biggest of Notch’s sons, but he was never weighed or measured, so the claim cannot be confirmed.
In June 2017 the vets reported that his brother was so protective that two vehicles had to keep him away while Caesar was treated. The brother was Notch II, the only other son of Notch still alive.
