Unknown – unknown
Born in an unrecorded place
Fang was the male lion of the River Pride, also called the Rekero Pride, along the Mara River in Kenya’s Masai Mara. He became known around the world through Disneynature’s 2011 film African Cats, narrated by Samuel L. Jackson, in which he is the ageing protector of the lionesses Layla and Mara.
His name came from a broken canine that left a lone fang showing. In the film, a rival male called Kali and his four sons challenge Fang across the river; in reality these were Notch and his sons, and Notch and his son Mighty Long are reported to have led the challenge. Fang lost the River Pride around 2010.
What became of Fang after his defeat has not been published. African Cats ends with his pride under its new rulers, and Notch’s sons went on to father many cubs there.
