White Face

Also known as Whiteface · The Last Northern Matimba

c. 2006/07 – December 2017

Born in Ngala Game Reserve, beside Kruger National Park, South Africa

White Face was one of the six Matimba males and, after the coalition split, one of the three Northern Matimba with Shaka and Slit Nose. He was named for his pale face.

The Matimba were six male lions from Ngala Game Reserve beside Kruger National Park in South Africa: five related males born around 2006–2007 in the Birmingham Pride, most likely sired by the three older Skybed males, and an older outsider, Ndhuna, whom the pride adopted. In 2010 they took over the Manyeleti Game Reserve, becoming the pride males of all its prides, and spread into Kruger, Ngala and the northern Sabi Sand. After Ndhuna disappeared in 2012, the five split into two groups: the Northern Matimba (Shaka, Slit Nose and White Face) and the Southern Matimba (Hairy Belly and Ginger).

White Face outlived both his northern brothers. After Slit Nose was killed by the Avoca males in January 2017, he kept control of the Skorro Pride on his own, spending his last months with them around the Tamboti area of Timbavati. Seen frail and weak, he died of old age in December 2017, at about eleven, the last of the Northern Matimba.
